Swimmers get season under way

Kutztown sophomore Ashley Singer (Warwick) set a new school and pool record in the 1000y freestyle against Misericordia ... Pitt freshman Lisa McDonnell (Hempfield) placed second in the 200y IM and picked up two first place finishes in the 400y free and medley relays ... Saint Francis sophomore Cara Morgan (Hempfield) placed first in the 500y and 1000y freestyle events against Loyola ... Bucknell junior JB Peterman (Penn Manor) took second in the 100y free and third in the 50y free against Boston College ... Bloomsburg senior Courtney Dean (Hempfield) won the 50 free against Mansfield, while freshman Amy Usciak (Hempfield) and senior Lauren Sterkenberg (Hempfield) finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 fly ... Anderson repeats as Defender of Week

For the second week in a row Lebanon Valley College senior Mallary Anderson (Donegal) has been honored as the Commonwealth Conference Defender/Goalie of the Week in field hockey.

Millersville sophomore Pricilla Jennings (Solanco) finished fourth in the PSAC championships ... Duquesne sophomore Emily Beahan (Garden Spot) finished in 18th place at the Atlantic 10 championships ... and Dickinson sophomore Darcy McDonald (Warwick) placed second in the Centennial Conference championships and earned First-team All-Conference honors.

Gettysburg senior midfielder Maura Downey (Lancaster Catholic) netted her first career hat trick, including the game winner, to give Gettysburg a victory over Dickinson.

More conference and all-star accolades for former LL'ers

In Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women's tennis, Alvernia College sophomore Breana Martzall (Conestoga Valley) won the "Push the Rock" Sportsmanship Award and Cabrini junior Amy Sarbaugh (Elizabethtown) was named to the All-Pac First Team.

Kutztown sophomore Austin Kinney (Hempfield) was selected as the PSAC Player of the Week in women's volleyball. In a pair of games, Kinney dished out 36 assists and recorded 27 digs and three blocks.

Players of Week named in PSAC, Centennial, Commonwealth and Patriot leagues

West Chester junior Danielle Gerz (Conestoga Valley) was selected as PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week in women's soccer. Gerz helped West Chester to a 3-0 week and its first perfect regular-season (18-0) by scoring five goals, including two game-winners ... Cal freshman Amanda Heister (Northern Lebanon) was named as the PSAC Western Division Player of the Week in women's soccer. Heister scored three goals and had an assist in two games last week.

Muhlenberg junior goalkeeper Peter Bennett (Conestoga Valley) was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. Bennett tied his career high of nine saves in back-to-back shutout victories.

McDonnell sets records in intra-squad meet at Pitt

Pitt freshman Lisa McDonnell (Hempfield) set a freshman record in the 100y back and a meet record in the 200 free relay at the annual Blue-Gold Intrasquad swim meet last weekend. She also won the 100y free.

IUP freshman goalie Lydia Dolly (Hempfield) recorded her fourth career shutout (three solo, one shared) in a game against Kutztown earlier this week. Dolly had seven saves in the game.

Army's Goss, F&M's Mancino make marks last week

Last week, Army sophomore midfielder Sarah Goss (Lancaster Catholic) earned Honorable Mention Patriot League Player of the Week in soccer. Goss forced a 1-1 double overtime tie with Lehigh by scoring Army's lone goal in the 61st minute of the match.

Shippensburg University senior forward Natalie Grazan (Manheim Central) was named the PSAC Player of the Week in field hockey. Grazan led Shippensburg to a pair of conference victories by scoring three goals and two assists.

Singer, Bonifas win multiple events in KU swim opener

Kutztown junior Ashley Singer (Warwick) won four events in a swim meet against West Chester over the weekend. Singer claimed first place in the 100y and 200y freestyle, 50y butterfly and 200y freestyle relay. Junior Sean Bonifas won two events for the Kutztown men, placing first in the 50y and 100y breast stroke. Two other former LL swimmers on the Golden Bears roster: freshmen Kelly Herman (Hempfield) and Shannon Yoskoski (Donegal).

Johnson, Parker in weekend gridiron action

Muhlenberg junior fullback Matt Johnson (Lancaster Catholic) rushed for 100 yards on 25 carries to help down Ursinus 22-6 on Saturday. It was Johnson's second career 100-yard day ... Goalkeeper Varga is A10 Co-Player of Week

Duquesne University senior goalkeeper Zach Varga (Hempfield) has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week. Varga posted back-to-back shutouts for a 2-0 weekend in Atlantic 10 play. Varga now has four shutouts on the season and has a 1.14 goals against average.

PSU wrestler Anspach ranked 19 in nation

Penn State senior Aaron Anspach (Columbia) is ranked No. 19 at heavyweight in the 2006-07 W.I.N. Magazine pre-season wrestling rankings. According to PSU, Anspach, who has battled injuries throughout much of collegiate career, went 14-8 last year, was 3-2 in dual matches, and has a 21-11 career record.

Shover nets two goals in UD soccer victories

University of Delaware sophomore Kasie Shover (Penn Manor) scored the lone goal of the game — and recorded a team high five shots — in a 1-0 soccer victory over Towson on Sunday. A weekend earlier, she scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime against James Madison.

Hildebrand picked as PAC volleyballer of week - again

Eastern University sophomore Kara Hildebrand (Garden Spot) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Volleyball Player of the Week — the third week she captured the PAC honor. Hildebrand recorded 87 kills, 49 digs, 7 blocks and 9 service aces in a 4-2 (2-0 PAC) week. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the New York University Tournament.

LL threesome spikes KU volleyball

Kutztown University downed Cheyney in volleyball action earlier last week with the help of freshmen Alison Wise (Garden Spot), who had seven digs, and Katie Miller (Elizabethtown), who added eight kills. Sophomore Austin Kinney (Hempfield) recorded five service aces. This past weekend in a two-match tournament in Florida, Kinney tallied 96 assists and 13 digs.

Varga makes 8 saves in goal
