W&M's Heacock honored as CAA field athlete of week

William & Mary freshman Alex Heacock (Warwick) was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after qualifying for the IC4A Championships in the javelin last Saturday. Heacock threw the javelin 58.16m in only his second collegiate appearance at the Fred Hardy Invitational.

LVC's Vargo, Roberts receive Commonwealth accolades

Two former LL Leaguers now at Lebanon Valley College have been named Commonwealth Conference Players of the Week. In tennis, junior Erik Vargo (Lancaster Catholic) was a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play last week. For the season, he is 6-3 at No. 1 singles and has won his last five matches. In softball, junior Jenn Roberts (Hempfield) hit .500 (6-for-12), smacked two home runs, and had eight RBIs in a 4-0 week for Lebanon Valley.

Ship's Hess is baseball player of week

Shippensburg senior outfielder Jeremy Hess (Lampeter-Strasburg) was named the PSAC Western Division Baseball Player of the Week. Hess registered at least two hits in every game last week on his way to a .538 (7-13) average. He also collected two doubles and five RBIs in the three-game stretch.

Fritz is captain of York track team

Junior sprinter/jumper Krissy Fritz (Lampeter-Strasburg) has been named a captain of the York College women's track and field team for the 2006 season. She's joined on the roster by junior thrower Andrea Paulukow (Hempfield). On the York College men's track roster are four freshmen: Brad Kauffman (Lancaster Catholic), Derrick Martin (Garden Spot), Eric McAllister (Columbia) and Gary Rynier (Warwick).

Gast, Bee lead MU in golf invitational

Sophomore Corey Gast (Lampeter-Strasburg) finished second overall, leading Millersville to the team championship at the Goldey-Beacom men’s golf Invitational this past Sunday and Monday. Sophomore Bob Bee (Penn Manor) rounded out the Marauders’ competitors.

Butler is PSAC baseball player of week

East Stroudsburg junior outfielder Josh Butler (Garden Spot) was named PSAC Eastern Division Baseball Player of the Week. Butler is hitting .500 (32-64) with three doubles, four triples, six home runs and 28 RBI. He has crossed the plate 24 times and has 10 stolen bases while carrying a .577 on-base percentage.

Beahan wins gold in A10 track relay

At the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships last month, Duquesne freshman Emily Beahan (Garden Spot) ran the 800m leg of the Dukes' first-place-finishing distance medley relay team. She also placed ninth in the 800m individual event.

Groff is first All-American swimmer at Gordon College

Gordon College freshman swimming standout Kristen Groff (Denver, PA) was named a Division III All-American for her efforts at the NCAA Nationals held at the University of Minnesota last weekend. Groff dropped a second off her 200 breaststroke time, coming in seventh place overall (the only freshman in the top eight) with a 2:25.20 finish. Additionally, she placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.71 time. Groff is the first Gordon College swimmer to be named All-American and to make an appearance at Nationals.

Goedkoop, Enoch are Commonwealth player, hurler of the week

Juniata College senior Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township) and sophomore Jason Enoch (Hempfield) have been selected as the Commonwealth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for their efforts in three Juniata wins last week. Goedkoop is a two-time All-Conference player and led Juniata in home runs, slugging percentage and RBI in 2005 and was second in both hits and runs. Enoch was tabbed as the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year in 2005 when he tied for the Juniata lead in victories and was also tops on the pitching staff with 51 strikeouts. His 3.58 earned run average was second-best among the regular starters.
