Wrestling tourney notes from Lock Haven, Ursinus

According to the Lock Haven University athletic department, rookie Tom Kocher (Manheim Township) at 197 lbs. "continues to make some noise in his freshman season," as he scored a strong 11-5 win over Gardner-Webb in the Southern Scuffle hosted by UNC-Greensboro this weekend ... Ursinus College senior Eddie Murray (Lampeter-Strasburg) was the individual medalist at 133 lbs. at the Citrus Open in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday. Murray posted three straight wins for the championship.

Two former LL League hoopsters squared off in the consolation game of the Ramada Inn/Monarch Classic at King's College on Wednesday. Susquehanna University sophomore Brad Okonak (Lebanon) made his second start of the season and finished with nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. For Gettysburg, sophomore Zach Shedleski (Lancaster Catholic) scored a career-high six points. Gettysburg won the game 68-61.

F&M College sophomore Derek Hines (Manheim Twp.) finished with a double-double as he scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a 78-73 win over Alvernia College on Tuesday. Hines also had two blocked shots ... Shippensburg University freshman Phylicia Bessick (Hempfield) scored 12 points in a 81-76 victory over East Stroudsburg Tuesday. Bessick has scored 10 or more points in seven of her eight games played as a freshman this season, averaging 12.6 points per game ... Karl swimming at Bowdoin

Sophomore Adam Karl (McCaskey) is swimming distance freestyle for Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine. He placed fourth in the 1000 and fifth in the 500 in a triangular meet against MIT and Babson earlier this season. Bowdoin competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

Seniors Aaron Anspach (Columbia) at heavyweight and A.J. Cummins (Warwick) at 197 lbs. are wrestling for Penn State this season. Anspach won an 18-7 decision in a match-up against Penn last Saturday. In a match last Friday against Navy, Cummins won with a 3-1 decision.

Several former LL Leaguer's will be competing in indoor (and outdoor) track for Lock Haven University this season, including sophomore Missy Weaver (Garden Spot) in steeplechase, freshman Lindsey Blessing (Northern Lebanon) in pool vault, freshman Kip Horbal (Conestoga Valley) in distance events, and senior Fieldon Daubert (Annville-Cleona) in throws. Daubert is the school record-holder in the hammer and a former NCAA qualifier in the javelin.

At the DuCharme Invitational on Friday at Dickinson College, Shippensburg University freshmen Karen Good (Garden Spot) finished first in the long jump, senior Lindsey Incorvati (Manheim Township) placed second in the 1,000 meters, and freshman James Wilson (Ephrata) came in second in the 55 meters ... For Dickinson, senior Abbey Fergusson (Hempfield) placed second in the 5000 with an NCAA provisional time, while senior Emily Hulme (Cedar Crest) just missed provisional qualifying and finished third. At the Dickinson Holiday Spring & Field Meet last weekend, Dickinson College sophomore Katie Creme (Lancaster Catholic) set a new school record in the 600 meters with a winning time of 1:48.9. She also placed first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.25.

Air Force's White swims third-fastest 500 free

In a dual meet against San Diego State last Saturday, Air Force junior Lauren White (Elizabethtown) dominated the distance freestyle events, winning the 1000 free and the 500 free. In November, at the 2005 Speedo Cup in Long Beach, CA, White placed sixth in the 500 free with the third-fastest mark in school history (4:57.55) and also finished sixth in the mile.

University of Tennessee junior Andrew Engle (Manheim Central) notched first in the 200 and 400 medley relays, fourth in the 100 fly, 8th in the 200 fly, and 17th in the 50 free.
