Enoch selected to all-region team

Juniata College sophomore hurler Jason Enoch (Hempfield) has been selected to the 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team. Enoch captured third-team honors as he earned a spot on the All-Region Team for the first time in his career.

Garber, Hess named to all-region baseball squads

At Shippensburg University, junior Justin Garber (Elizabethtown) earned American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-North Atlantic Region First Team honors, while senior Jeremy Hess (Lampeter Strasburg) was a Second Team All-North Atlantic Region honoree by both organizations. Garber finished the season with a team-high .410 batting average that also ranks him third in the PSAC. He is also ranked third in hits (82) and runs scored (56) while placing fifth in on-base percentage at .467. Hess was Shippensburg's leader in RBI with 49, ranked second in the PSAC in slugging percentage (.632) and third in home runs (9). He also posted a career-high .379 batting average.

Heisey named conference baseball player of year

Messiah College junior centerfielder Chris Heisey (Donegal) was named the 2006 Commonwealth Conference Baseball Player of the Year. Heisey is making his third straight appearance on the All-Conference First Team.

Caruthers, Hanecak wrap up season in NCAA 3rd round

LVC's Orfanella finishes 9th in hammer at ECACs

On the first day of the ECAC track and field championships on Thursday, Lebanon Valley College junior Nick Orfanella (Ephrata) placed ninth among 22 competitors in the hammer with a toss of 168-2.

Etown's White is key in NCAA regionals victory

Elizabethtown College junior Ryan White (Cedar Crest) is starting in left field as Etown makes its way through the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional baseball tournament. On Wednesday, the Blue Jays defeated second-seeded Otterbein College 7-3 in ten innings. White scored once, was hit by a pitch twice, and had two sacrifice bunts in five plate appearances for Etown.

Juniata College seniors Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township) and Zach Sternberg (McCaskey) and sophomores Jason Enoch (Hempfield) and Dan Kauffman (Penn Manor) have been selected to the first team of the 2006 All-Commonwealth Conference Baseball Team. In addition, Enoch was named the Commonwealth Pitcher of the Year.

Women's all-conference lacrosse team includes Diffenderfer

Eastern University senior attack Diana Diffenderfer (Conestoga Valley) earned second team All-PAC women's lacrosse recognition for her 29 goals and 12 assists this season. Eastern won its first-ever PAC Championship last weekend.

WCU's Keefer achieves Philly-area honors

West Chester University senior sprinter Julie Keefer (Palmyra) was chosen to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Swimming Team after achieving a 3.42 grade point average in elementary education. She was a two-time All-American with one Honorable Mention All-American award this year. Keefer was also on two PSAC Championship relay teams (200 free, 400 free) and earned five All-PSAC selections for finishing first, second or third in the league finale.

Orfanella 'hammers' record, Withum earns EIVA all-star honors

Lebanon Valley College junior Nick Orfanella (Ephrata) won gold in the hammer throw and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championships on the final day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships last Saturday. After winning the discus and taking third in the shot put, Orfanella threw the hammer 169-1, smashing his previous school record by exactly 10 feet and exceeding the NCAA provisional standard by three inches.

Juniata College senior Cordt Withum (Penn Manor) claimed second-team EIVA Division III All-Star honors. One of the most productive middles in school history, Withum led the team in solo blocks in his final season and was second with 110 overall blocks overall. He was also second with a .309 hitting percentage and finished the year with 168 kills, the fifth-highest total on the team. Withum closed his career with 366 blocks, the third-highest total in school history. He also knocked out 617 kills over his four-year career, and recorded a stellar .380 career hitting percentage.

Dickinson's McDonald, Creme take 2nd at CC track champs

Dickinson College freshman Darcy McDonald (Warwick) finished second in the 5000 meters and freshman Katie Creme (Lancaster Catholic) placed second in the 400 meter hurdles at the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend.

Goedkoop, Buffenmyer win Juniata student-athlete honors

At Juniata College's 10th Mailand McIlroy Athletics Awards Ceremony last Sunday, senior baseball player Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township) received the Stanford Mickle Award for the Most Outstanding Male Athlete and freshman Kelsey Buffenmyer (Donegal) was the recipient of the J. Foster Gehrett Most Valuable Player award for the Juniata women's track and field team.

Caruthers named to All-CC 2nd team

Franklin & Marshall College senior outfielder Corey Caruthers (Penn Manor) was selected to the 2006 All-Centennial Conference second team. A first-team selection last year, Caruthers is hitting .297 (38-for-128) with seven doubles, one triple, two homeruns, 24 RBI, 25 runs scored, a .414 slugging percentage, 18 walks and 13 stolen bases. In Centennial Conference games, he is batting .317 (20-for-63) with five doubles, 14 RBI, 15 runs scored, a .397 slugging percentage, 11 walks and 11 stolen bases. For his career, he is hitting .297 (153-for-516) with 25 doubles, five triples, five homeruns, 81 RBI, 93 runs scored, 60 walks and 51 stolen bases as he ranks third in hits (153) and stolen bases (51), sixth in runs (93) and seventh in doubles (25).

'Ville tracksters finish strong at Penn Relays

At the Penn Relays, Millersville sophomore Kelvin Reyes (Cedar Crest) was part of the 4x200-meter relay team that set a new school record with a combined time of 1:29.66. Senior Shannon Murphy (Hempfield) and freshman Priscilla Jennings (Solanco) teamed together as part of the 4x400-meter relay squad that finished first in their heat. Sophomore Adam Malloy (Ephrata) was part of the 1600-meter relay team in the Wetzler/Pennsylvania division. Freshman Aiden Stiger (Lampeter-Strasburg) placed first in the 800 with a time of 1:59.62.

Powl on mound for WCU Golden Rams

Solanco's Chris Powl, a sophomore pitcher on the West Chester University baseball team, was inadvertently excluded in the March 7 season preview post titled "PSAC baseball lineup for '06 season." (Use the search tool at the top of this page to find and refer to that original post.) In his last outing on the mound this past weekend against Mansfield, Powl pitched five innings to pick up a 9-5 victory. He struck out three batters and allowed four earned runs and six hits.
